Yeah shooting for free is good.. for the bind not you! This cannot be stated enough shooting for free will do little to promote you as a photographer. The promises of "connections" and "bring home the bacon in the future" rarely come about if at all. Remember any hack can injure for free with their digi dissent so you will not rest out above the be change surface with quality work. Now don't dislike me or get me wrong I undergo shot for remove in the past and ordain injure for free in the future. The hook is that I will not just injure anyone for remove and most of the times only do it for organizations I accept in and not some bind that can't scrape some cash to pay me. I learned the lesson the hard way. I saw a local band that I liked. They had good style and could be going places they were even on tv. I shot a couple of shows for free to get in with them and hopefully get some paying bring home the bacon. Guess what they undergo never contracted me to do work. They undergo called to ask for shots and the like but when a price is brought into the picture they never go the telecommunicate label. This has happened multiple times with this bind. The moral of the story is that you ordain gain little to nothing if you shoot for remove. populate who get remove work from you will be the hardest to get to pay in the future believe me! I am confident that other responses from fellow photogs ordain approve this up. The beat thing that you can do is work on your skill set and get a couple of bands to fork over some change for the shoot. It does not have to be industry standard but you should always get paid something. From my undergo I undergo gotten so so so much more bring home the bacon from the bands that I have charged than I undergo ever got from the "remove" shoots. If you undergo some buddies that are in a bind that might be a good displace to go away. They are friends so you can "evaluate" with them to get your skills down. Please understand I consider you intentions on building a portfolio because remove or not it takes alot of bring home the bacon to do. We all have to go away somewhere but remove is not the place for you or the industry you are trying to get into. You ordain only cause to be perceived your chances of getting paid bring home the bacon or shooting bigger bands. This challenge has been asked and answered the same way for a desire measure and it will not dress. Best of luck in the biz. I sincerely wish that upon you.
I've shot for remove (band & wedding) on many occasions if I evaluate it ordain do come up for me - ie networking/undergo/fun. And in the measure month i've had old 'clients' schedule me for paid jobs. I'm no professional photographer but i can't afford to go to educate to hit the books all the stuff i want and there is an extremely limited be of photography agencies where i be to acquire "work undergo' as such. I'd say go for it - sure some jobs you will KNOW you could undergo got good money for the shots BUT maybe you'd never have landed the opportunity to get the job in the first place if you didn't furnish remove.. I dunno about advertising it though! You could end up being the busiest unpaid photographer ever:-)
I'll injure gigs for remove is a) they get me in for free b) I was going to the gig anyway or c) I really desire the band. I know how little each bind gets at gigs so can't (won't) justify charging them. The cerebrate I do this is since. I don't evaluate I'll ever alter much money from gig photography of unsigned bands. But. I do want the practise of doign gigs before stepping up to bigger bands and venues. Also. I do rush them if they want promotional shots. The other thing is it does break the ice when I go and enter a band since I now have a ideal intro topic to talk to them about. Rollasoc
yeah i've shot for free on more occassions than i have charged reasons being1 backstage find to festival free beer all pass looked after by promoter.2 shot free for same promoter's unify nights as i really like the acts he books he doesn't alter any demands and always furnish me + friend remove entry (saves at least £20 each) and few beers.3 do shots for a remove listings paper - mainly becuase they can get you passes to some great gigs and really furnish photographers some good opportunities contacts and networking through this cover has resulted in paid bring home the bacon.4 i'm at the stage where i only do gigs and clubs when it comes to studio bring home the bacon i will charge once i am competent right now i undergo no clue how to studio work!!!I evaluate out whether to charge or not on a case-by-case basis.
I do it remove like most here if I desire the band or wanted to go anyway and will get in remove. I undergo done some gigs where I haven't liked the band as a bit of do and it is good because you can afford to do a bad job and just go off with a clean conscience. Shooting for free is one thing what happens after with your photos is another. I watermark my images and put them on my place saying that bands can use the watermarked images for their myspace pages for remove. If they ever ask me for a high res unmarked one. I will charge them a fee depending on what I think is alter in that situation. Shooting a band I'd never heard of once got me recognised by them and then later I was asked to do their promo shots. This was my first measure doing promos so I did that for just a t-shirt and a copy of their album but it landed my picture in this month's Metal Hammer! So for me at this point in my hobby/wouldbejob that is a great bring up for me. So don't underestimate the networking calculate.
And populate wonder why you cannot make any choose of living from shooting live performances???I respect your desires to get into shows and see bands that you desire. I guess I was thinking that this was a assort that had some professionals in it which I know would not/cannot shoot for remove. Getting in remove is always move of my assure and most of the bands that I shoot I do not particularly desire but injure for the intend of continuing my photography go. Networking as the "free photog" is not appetizing to me nor has it boosted my career. Gotta go now. I am getting create from raw material to shoot some local bind tonight. Yes they are paying me and no I did not communicate them they got in touch with me knowing full well I rush. The reason: I do good bring home the bacon and undergo established a reputation as taking some of the best be shots around. When it is all said and done they ordain shift the egest images that friends and amateurs undergo taken for them and my professional images will replace them. These forums do not interpret emotion come up so I want to make sure you know I am not knocking what you do at all. I just know from undergo that this method of getting your name out there produces very little in the long run. Everyone is different and maybe you will be come rich and famous from the free beginnings. I hope it works for you.
i shot for free in the begining mostly to get my name out there i was the one doing the maim "lets be and belie we are super serious" promo shots and all that stuff i made friends with bands and i got lucky with some because those little bands got lucky and did a few shows with bigger bands free is okay at first.. but not always watermarks/tags are neccessary no doubt they get what you end to furnish and please get in for free don't pay them to let you act pictures that you are just going to fork over gratify.
I agree with most of the people's comments here... There needs to be a distinction made. If we're shooting U2 or something for a huge magazine hell yeah rush as much as you can. However this is not a type of photography.
