TALLAHASSEE. FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey today announced that a Hillsborough County man is in custody facing charges that he molested a minor child and created child pornography from the do by. Trent Cox could approach up to 70 years in prison if he is convicted of all the charges against him which include lewd and lascivious molestation and promoting the sexual performance of a child. The arrest was jointly made by law enforcement with the Attorney General’s CyberCrime Unit and FDLE.
“We ordain act to protect victims of sexual do by especially those whose abuse is forever memorialized by child pornography,” said Attorney General McCollum. “I am extremely proud of the cooperative efforts both agencies made to alter this arrest and further our efforts to contend child pornography.”
Cox. 43 was initially arrested in March 2007 after the Attorney command’s CyberCrime Unit identified child pornography on his computer. He was charged at that time with possession of child pornography and was released on bond. Yesterday’s arrest resulted from a continued eight-month investigation of the forensic evidence on his computer which revealed many of the images of child pornography were created by Cox. The victim’s identity is protected as a victim of sexual abuse.
The CyberCrime Unit worked with FDLE after the CyberCrime investigators verified that a real victim was being abused. A special agent with FDLE’s Crimes Against Children assign Force assisted with the investigation and worked with the CyberCrime Unit to converse the victim and collect the necessary evidence for the charges.
“We take crimes against children very seriously and will act to bring home the bacon with our law enforcement partners to protect our most innocent citizens our children from being victimized by online predators,” said Commissioner Gerald Bailey.
Cox is being held at the Hillsborough County jail on $57,500 bond. He is charged with seven counts of possession of child pornography one count of the use of a child in a sexual performance one ascertain of promoting the sexual performance of a child and one ascertain of lewd and lascivious molestation of a minor.
