For over 60 years the has been working on behalf of vegetarians in our city. Originally a group that simply organized dinners over the years the association has published two cookbooks created an annual directory set up a publically-accessible resource centre and annually hosts the largest vegetarian food fair in North America with an attendance of over 15,000 people. Membership in the association has grown to over 1000 people. Over the past two years executives staff and volunteers have worked to create a strategic plan up to the year 2010. With efforts concentrated on different areas for each of the three years the TVA has determined to cerebrate on the issues of Environment for 2008. Health for 2009 and Compassion for Animals in 2010. The recently released strategic plan outlines how the TVA will not only increase membership but how various campaigns will excite others to try a vegetarian fast question current farming and eating practices increase awareness of health and nutrition issues related to eating meat and to truly consider where their food comes from in terms of treatment of food animals. The plan also addresses other issues and concerns that may assist in broadening their membership base and in getting their communicate out such as ensuring that all vegetarians feel welcomed and included in the TVA’s programmes; attracting and keeping volunteers; being heard and acknowledged by the media; ensuring that both vegans and lacto-ovo vegetarians have a voice in Association decisions and in addressing fears and concerns prevalent in non-vegetarians. At the recent annual meeting where the strategic plan was unveiled. Executive Director Kathleen Farley and Development Coordinator David Alexander addressed the group with information on the great advances made by the TVA in the past year because of their volunteers. It's called the Sri Shinmoy Sentre. Anyone heard of it? ( I am changing the spelling a bit because I don't want populate to explore it as the membership is small and I don't want them or me to be exposed but the Sh is a Ch and it is actually Centre)They go a man who claims to move peace and harmony around the world. They change their names to names given by him. He claims to be an avatar and says he welcomes all religions into his group and even has Catholics and other Christians in his group. The members be to be celibate unless they get permission from him to be in a relationship. They feature sari's or the men wear the white Indian clothing. They are to be strict vegetarians and they have to meditate in front of a photo of him. My SIL joined when she was 14 after attending a non denom bible camp and the kids there got drunk so she was turned off. Sri Shinmoy Sentre advertises as though they are a meditation group/yoga but really they are recruiting. My MIL got worried and joined to keep an eye out. Unfortunately she got sucked in too. They undergo been members for over 10 years and the beat thing is that my SIL works for one of his "comprehend Enterprises" and is paid less than $2 an hour. It is a vegetarian cafe and she has worked there since she was 14. She hasn't gone beyond high educate for her education. She doesn't watch any TV or act in real world things ( not always a bad thing ) but she is also not contributing to social security so if she gets sick who will take care of her? The Cult? I evaluate not. My MIL has a real job.. but her and my FIL pay for her apartment and another cult member lives with her. They take desire trips to Turkey and Asia and sing their songs and spread the message. The leader is very manipulative and brainwashing. Their trips always act place over the Christmas holidays so my DH and I never get to see his family over Christmas. We try not to think about it too much because it saddens us and frustrates us. My FIL is not involved but he stays change state and accepts everything they do to keep them close. My DH and I be 2000 Miles from them.. so we drop about the situation easily. We have thought about seeking professional help but I speculate you can only just commune and hope they leave right? Anyone else had any cult experiences? They feel so STIFLING.
