I wanted to use the speakers and sub with the new Onkyo 605 I ordain be getting next week. I will also be getting the Sharp lc46d92u and the HD-A30 player and I already have a Scientific Atlanta 8300 HDPVR ( not sure if all that info really matters but thought id write it in case. And so you also have an idea of how my setup will be). So my main question is this will I be able to hook up the SCHT680 speakers and sub to my Onkyo 605 receiver?I realize that I should be getting new speakers but I really cant at the moment as all the money has gone towards the TV receiver and hd-dvd player. I wanted to use the speakers I already undergo as a temporary solution. I have no idea about speaker specs and such so I have provided the specs to my speakers and sub here and maybe someone can read it and tell me if they are useable or not. As best I can tell from the specs you'll be able to connect all of the speakers except your subwoofer. Most non-HTIB subwoofers are powered meaning they have their own amplifier built in. You use an RCA-type connector to connect them to your receiver's subwoofer/LFE output. From the specs alone it looks like your sub is powered by the amplifier that's built in to your old receiver and is connected via normal speaker wire. If you really wanted to use your sub you would have to buy an external amplifier for it which isn't worth it given the low specs/low performance of that sub. Unfortunately your other speakers don't put out much bass given the -10dB specification for the various speakers. Usually these specs are given with a -3dB tolerance. In a nutshell you really need a sub. I suggest checking out the subwoofer forum for recommendations but there are some very respectable subs for ~$200 if you could muster that. As for the other speakers connect them to the appropriate binding posts on the back of your Onkyo with regular speaker wire. I'm hoping they connect with regular speaker wire. I know some HTIBs use RCA-like connectors to simplify setup. If that's the case you'll be an adapter. I know they exist but other than that. I can't tell you anything about them. However the best advice I can give you would to be a whole new set of speakers. If you don't have the money for a whole set find a decent unify of $200 bookshelves and put together a system with time. Hope this helps. Thanks for the informative reply rmccully. Watch your local pawn shops or garage sales and you might pick up a cheap powered sub. Look at ebay and craigslist. If you are fine with the htib speakers a small sub is all you need. If you spend a lot of time here though you'll probably get the itch to see what else is out there. Haha very true ive already started to get the itch. Can someone comment on these speakers? Its 500$ off seems like an amazing deal to me and I really move pay too much money: They are probably going off of MSRP. IE: The MSRP is 799. Futureshop probably normally sells them for $399 or something. So really it's 100 off. They are just trying to make it look like the sale is better than it really is. Not to reject Futureshop though b/c most places do this. My 2cents is that your receiver is much nicer than your current setup or those Athena's. I choose you buy your Front L/R speakers and a sub alter now. Use the center and rear channels from your old setup until you undergo some more $$$ to replace them as come up. The binding posts are those big knobs of the right half of the image you have posted. They are in pairs with one in each unify being black the other being a unique alter. They undergo labels that say "front speakers bear on speakers" etc. They loose to reveal a hole that you put the wire into then screw back drink to secure. They are a more robust connector than the Zone 2 speaker outputs which are called "spring clips." They accept bare equip (like you have) or equip that is terminated with banana plugs or spades which are really just accessories that make connecting/disconnecting the wires easier. As for those Athenas. I haven't heard them but they are likely a step up from what you have now but not a big step up.
