"GPU offload or beefier CPU?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:24:50

Okay. I have decided to go away working on a little experiment. I realized the other day that I happen to have (and it's pathetic that I so much hardware lying around) a 6600GT. 7300GT. 7600GT. 7950GT. 8500GT. 8600GTS and 8800GTX (all PCIe) lying around... Some of these are already in my HTPCs while others are lying around... So anyway here's my thought. We have all been very active in trying to cause which of the current generation nVidia or ATI cards ordain perform "better" with media playback especially by offloading the decoding to the GPU. However what I'd like to see people go in with is results that they can compete the same media fine with an older card albeit with higher CPU usage (but it must be smooth and jitter free). And very important has anybody managed to analyse let's say a 6600GT with an 8600GT in terms of PQ? (change surface if the CPU usage is higher)? Just some random thoughts going through my head.. Personally i would opt for a beefier cpu but keep with a mid aim separate like the 7600 u undergo. On a core2duo of any type I can compete all Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs perfectly as desire as it has a PCI-e graphics card on the end of it. At 1.8GHz it will reach 80-90%At 2.4GHz it will arrive 60-80%If I use an AGP graphics card with the same processors it ordain stutter. Hey kapone... I must have missed this when you first posted it. Even my 9800pro's haven't skipped a beat with anything I've tried so far using a c2d or a pentium d. I haven't kept bring in of utilization really. I don't really care as long as it's not dropping frames. Anyway as soon as we undergo the 8600gt for "the project" I will be comparing it's playback quality with the 9800pro system as well as comparing hardware decoding vs software decoding. My displays are crt projectors with 1080i and better optimum resolutions on screens 72" diagonal and larger so I should undergo some real results with critical viewing on very large screens here within another month or so. I've heard some populate affirm that change surface on 8600gt's etc that software decoding tends to have exceed quality than hardware decoding but then there are just as many populate saying the opposite. I'm interested in finding out the truth just as you are so if you test these things before I do gratify share your results. "Yet another HTPC build - no video card this time though..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 18:24:28

I'm just about to throw money at our HTPC and do a major upgrade. Before I do I'm scouring the web for known issues that I'm going to undergo to broach with. I've been researching this for a bring together of weeks now. One of the biggest concerns I have relates to HD playback. Very soon I intend to add an HD-DVD or Bluray drive and I be everything to work seamlessly - without having to add a video separate. I've already posted questions on another forum (TGB) but since there seems to be more knowledge/use of G965 powered video solutions here... Here is my intend:Intel DG965WHMKR motherboard Prolink ADD-7315-DVI-T add-on cardIntel core out 2 Quad Q6600 processor2x 1GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM. 1.8V. 5-5-5 timing Sabrent SBT-RDIT Ultra ATA 100/133 IDE RAID PCI Controller Card (Silicon Image 680)Zalman CNPS7700-Cu 1200mm CPU Cooler Universal DVI Male/HDMI Female Adapter to connect to our current HDTV Standard 6 foot HDMI cableI'm also going to keep the following "old" equipment:Vista Home PremiumAccent HT400B full ATX case with parallel turn VFDUltra XVS600W PSU2x SATA 300GB drives in a assail 0 configuration for Recorded TV1x EIDE 500GB drive for movies1x EIDE 300GB control for photos music & videos1x EIDE 160GB drive for OS (dual boot MCE2005/Vista HP)Hauppage PVR-250 TV TunerLG GSA4167B DVD burnerToshiba 51H83 HDTV (HDMI/DVI or component depending on DRM)Yamaha RX-V2400 amp connected using SPDIF (Dolby Digital Live for non-DD5.1/DTS multi bring audio)Beyond this. I undergo planned additional upgrades that includes an R5000HD addition to input HD MPEG-2 circumscribe through USB (using FireSTB) an HDCP compliant HDTV. HDMI 8 channel digital audio through a new receiver and an HD-DVD or Bluray control/burner. I'm hoping these upgrades will "just work" if I've planned out the basic system properly. My biggest concern alter now is 1080p h.264 content playback since the X3000 doesn't give h.264 decoding. I have spoken to Cyberlink and they claim PowerDVD Ultra now supports G965 motherboards using X3000 graphics but does it actually bring home the bacon today? Intel also advertises that it works with the right CPU and player (and Intel lists PowerDVD Ultra as one of the "optimized" players for the X3000). When will Broadcom h.264 decoding PCIe 1x cards be available? Is this something I should intend on?What about Dolby Digital be. Do the Intel drivers give this in Vista yet? What about cater on. Will the G965 happily cater up on first boot using HDMI or component video if nothing else is plugged in (auto sight)? How come up does instant on/off work? Does the DG965WH actually shut off the lie panel LEDs (no flashing) when in S3 suspend and away mode as well as bear on properly using a Microsoft Media Center USB remote? Is there anything "special" about the G35/X3500 that is worth waiting for? From what I've construe it doesn't support h.264 either so I don't "think" it would be worth the act. Is there anything I'm missing? Copyright ©1995 - 2007 AVS Forum. Inc. - All Rights Reserved. It seems like Transformers HD is doing well on Amazon but who can really say. For the measure that it was in the top ten for DVDs for all we know the #1 dvd was selling 100 copies a day or less. "China CH-DVD facts...(HDDVD's CH.version)" posted by ~Ray

according to the news inform from CCTV news and newspaper the Chinese version of HDDVD. CH-DVD will be marketed in around walk.2008 it has been said that HDDVD player can play CHDVD disc by a firmware update and vice versa and probably there ordain be no region label also. CHDVD can suport discs include HDDVD. CHDVD. EVD. HVD,DVD,VCD & CD the CH-DVD player is designed based on TOSHIBA HD-A30 one Chinese movie YUN SHUI YAO(a love story)had been shown in the press conference i only experience it's recorded in VC-1 and it has both Chinese and English subtitles(shown in the same time) China is also planning to export it's local produced cheap HDDVD players that would be a great impact on BD. Excellent news! Thank you very much for the modify. In reading the DVD forum specs I did see that CHD DVD players could compete all HD DVDs which is great. But it's good to comprehend that a firmware modify can let HD DVD players play CHD DVD too. change surface exceed to hear that CHD DVD players are based on the A30. This means that 1080p ordain pretty much become standard to all players in the future. What volumes are estimated for the first year of sales in China? It must be pretty huge... Thanks for the report - i'll be flicking over to CCTV ever now and then to see if they tell the airing. PS can't act to create a chinese HD film library. Does this mean it ordain March before we see China HD DVD players in the States? I was hoping they would be here sooner. In the news divide there is some mention about 199.99 OEM's for Wallmart and Bestbuy? This is the link to the ( ??? facts ??? ) Can so one clear this up? No the chinese-made HD DVD players will be here before the holidays. But the CHD DVD players will launch in China between now and Q1 08. Based on that inform hd n00b has linked. Walmart and Best Buy are definitely selling the $200 players! Yehaw! No the chinese-made HD DVD players ordain be here before the holidays. But the CHD DVD players ordain launch in China between now and Q1 08. Based on that report hd n00b has linked. Walmart and beat Buy are definitely selling the $200 players! Yehaw! And aim is stuck selling the $500 Sony player or the two new sony players at something like $800 and $1000 (I forget the actual pricing).
